Peugeot’s Hybrid Air

Very cool innovation from Peugeot:

the Hybrid Air has a reversible hydraulic pump that uses the braking energy to compress nitrogen gas in what looks like an oversized scuba tank. When the Hybrid Air driver next presses the accelerator, the compressed gas pushes hydraulic fluid, syringe fashion, through a gearbox to turn the wheels.

Braking is one of the most wasteful aspects of modern transportation.

Cars and train dispose of braking energy by generating massive amounts of heat… all a waste. Planes using some conventional braking but largely just turn their engines into maximum reverse thrust to slow down… again all a waste.

One thing I love about recent trends in hybrid technology are the efforts to capture wasted energy. This hydraulic/air pressure systems seems very promising.

Boeing’s Proposed Battery Fix

The Seattle Times has a piece on Boeing’s proposed solution to the 787 Dreamliner battery problems… a containment box. Sounds like the box will be meant to isolate the battery cells both physically and thermally and have gas venting so that in the event of a faulty battery gases are vented and oxygen doesn’t fuel a fire. I’d love to see more details on the fix. I think Boeing is being overly optimistic about gaining FAA approval… it won’t be quick.

More on 787 Batteries

Eamonn Fingleton with Forbes thinks the Japanese-sourced batteries are just the symptom of an overall larger problem with Boeing… the systematic outsourcing of key, proprietary manufacturing.

Mr. Fingleton links to a 2005 article he wrong, “Boeing, Boeing… Gone” that gives an in depth look at this outsourcing. A frequent and unfortunate pattern amongst American manufacturing industries.

787 Growing Pains

First it was a battery fire in the APU, then it was a fuel leak, now its a brake problem. Boeing’s Dreamliner is going through the normal process of cutting it’s teeth in regular service. No amount of controlled, FAA regulated, routine testing will work out the bugs that day-in-day-out service will expose. And that’s good. It’s also good to see the airlines not reacting to hype:

JAL spokesman Kazunori Kidosaki said the carrier, which operates seven Dreamliners, had no plans to change orders it has placed for another 38 aircraft. ANA, which has 17 Dreamliners flying its colors, will also stick with its orders for another 49, spokesman Etsuya Uchiyama said.

Of course this spate of growing pains doesn’t come without it’s cost to Boeing’s image. High-profile incidents like these don’t help the stock price and they’ve gotten the attention of the FAA. Glad to see the FAA going about this professionally without causing further hype:

“There are concerns about recent events involving the Boeing 787. That is why today we are conducting a comprehensive review,” Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told a news conference followed by more than 100 reporters around the world.
Those concerns notwithstanding, though, LaHood also maintained the plane was still airworthy.
“I believe this plane is safe and I would have absolutely no reservations about boarding one of these planes and taking a flight,” he said.

It seems like between Boeing and the FAA the right investigation and oversight is being taken place. Huge technological advances, which the 787 Dreamliner represents, don’t come without taking some risks. It’s heartening to see that we are still willing to take those risks.

Manhattan’s Internet Vault

I guess this is transportation related… transportation of data. Anyway, an interesting article on the Hurricane Sandy damage to Manhattan’s internet infrastructure. Some staggering photos of the telecom vaults in use in NYC. I’ve been inside some cool telecom and electrical vaults, but these are beyond anything I’ve ever seen.

Unfortunate that the pumps to keep air in the copper insulation for flood protection were located on floors that made them vulnerable to flooding.

Electric Car of the Year

Or rather, Motor Trend’s Car Of the Year 2013 happens to be electric. Actually watching their video and reading the material makes a compelling case for the Tesla Model S.

Tesla remarks that they didn’t just want to build the best electric car but rather the best car that just happens to be electric. Thats a great goal. But the $58,570 base price tag makes it a premium sedan that is unobtainable for many. I’d like to see an electric car maker with a goal inspired by Henry Ford; not the best car or best electric car but an electric car anyone can afford to own.

In any case, very exciting to see progress in the electric car market. The Model S looks like a fun ride.

Google Developing Driverless Cars

An older article in the New York Times on Google’s efforts at developing driverless cars.

I almost seems like the New York Times frames this as an admirable and benevolent activity on the part of Google. It’s pretty simply what there interest is in this… more searches and more clicked advertisements. If your car is driving itself, what activity are you likely to be engaged in while not driving? The internet is one obvious choice, and I’m sure Google will make that a very easy choice.
